Remembering some publications about the inhibitor gene in Manx Lines I thought it probably would be useful to share my experiences with silvers with you.  Firstly I would like to correct a flagrant mistake in one of the articles published which states that silver (=inhibitor) is a recessive gene.  It is definitely NOT recessive, but dominant (meaning a cat that is not silver cannot carry it and inherit it to its offspring, even having a zillion silver forbears, but on the other side only one parent has to be silver in order to be able to pass it on to its offspring).  The genetic symbol for it, according to the scientific classification of the late biologist Roy Robinson , is the capital "I" and that means it is a dominant gene.  I do however understand the meaning of that article well, but feel it moxed two things and then jumped to the wrong conclusion - the way it inherits (dominant) and the possibilities it has to express itself (polygenetic).  As with many genes the inhibitor gene is surrounded by polygenes that determine how good or how bad it can do its work.  In case of the silver gene it works as follows:
(1) the gene itself "I" discolors the roots of the hairs (leaves them without color pigment, so the hairs are empty at the roots and appear white there, which we call "silver") resulting in a "smoke" effect in non-agouti (=non tabby patterned, solid) cats and in a "silvertabby" effect in agouti (=tabby patterned cats).
(2) the accompanying polygenes determine how good the "I" gene can do the job.  A few polygenes present result in a badly discolored cat, the so called "low grade silvers".  In the smoke version you will still have to look for the silver - often only some discolored hair roots will be found around the neck and on the head, but many cats are registered incorrectly as non-silver in several breeds including Manx.  In the tabby version the silver is not completely there.  Mostly often on the underparts are discolored (=silver) rather OK, making a nice white belly and legs, but on top there are rusty parts giving a muddy appearance - so called unwished "tawny-color" (named so by breeders of silver Persians, British SH's, and Abyssinians).

This a quite normal phenomenon also appearing with many other colors and patterns and in fact with a lot of genes.  For example - the recessive "d" gene dilutes the main color (black to blue and red to cream), but the accompanying polygenes define how "blue" or "cream" the cat is.  As you know this can vary from dark steel-blue to pinkish soft light blue, respectively from "hot" reddish cream to soft delicate light cream.  Also the recessive "tb" gene is responsible for the dramatic classic tabby pattern.  But how well developed and in what form it appears is also defined by the accompanying polygenes (for example is the "oyster" or "bulls-eye" open or solid, is the "butterfly" on the shoulder-blades well defined clear or mixed into the three dorsal stripes? etc. etc.).  Also here the task is for the breeders who want to perfect the wished color or pattern to do so by elective breeding, accumulating the polygenes they need and getting rid of unwanted ones (for example - Persian blue breeders striving for the lightest version of the color and American SH tabby breeders striving for the perfectly designed classic pattern).

I have had by pure coincidence a  lot of experience in determining for many breeders if their kittens were silver or not and now know precisely where to look for what.  My former neighbor is a well known Siamese and Oriental Shorthair breeder and received in the beginning of the eighties a bluesilverspotted Oriental SH bred by the well known Patricia Turner (Scintilla) of Britain.  He was a typical low grade silver (the silver stemming from the old fashioned Chinchilla Persian seven generations away in his pedigree used to introduce the "I" gene into the Orientals) and as I am a genetics lover I helped many breeders out by determining litters so they could be correctly register their kittens colors.  In the Orientals a lot of experience was gained about how the "I" gene inherited and breeders soon found out that in order to achieve proper richly colored silvers with a complete discoloration of the hair roots everywhere on the cat, it was needed to breed silver to silver so one could accumulate enough polygenes in the lines and of course keep on the most complete "properly discolored" kittens in a litter on for breeding.  In a period of ten years this lead to a dramatic improvement and nowadays many silver colored Oriental Shorthairs here in Europe are decent and flashy in color and pattern, either in smoke or in silvertabby.  In fact even now some breeders have succeeded in breeding shaded silvers, as they had so many decently colored silvertabbies around, that they could try to mate the most vaguely patterned tabbies together in order to remove the pattern gradually by careful selection and get to the shaded version finally!

Oriental breeders did with the silvers, as firstly they had access to several silver lines from several different roots so could indeed combine and select without fearing for too much inbreeding.  And secondly the mentality was there to act with the gene and carefully working with it, instead of just "let it be around".  I know this last real breeding mentality has not been there in the Manx breed with regards to the silver colors, apart from a few dedicated people who did indeed work with the silver properly, like Jude and Jerry Rancier (Notale Manx) in the beginning of the eighties.  I know there are a few remnants left from the old day silver lies in the Manx breed in the USA (and by this I do NOT mean the lines going back to the silvertabby American SH sire who I heard mated in real a certain Manx female instead of the browntabby Manx sire that is present on the official pedigrees found in several currant lines still....).  But I am a bit annoyed that no breeder seems to value what they have still present in some of their breeding lines, let alone that they think about how they could use this lovely gene to their advantage.  I have seen several pedigrees where breeders just let the silver gene die out by keeping on the non-silver kitten from a silver parent, maybe happy to be finally rid to that "difficult" gene that gave so many "difficult to determine and register kittens" .....Several lines I know are registered incorrectly as well (black instead of blacksmoke in case of several low grad smokes)  and several owners of those lines that do not realize that they could achieve much more IF they combined things properly and bred the silvergene to its full potential, keeping in mind the genetic rules to play by, which I have tried to describe above.  I know silver is often hard to determine, but I feel breeders should register properly and if in doubt apply for the silver version as not to possible present unwanted surprises to later generations of breeders who suddenly get a silver kitten that they cannot register properly any more, as both parents are registered as non-silver.  And also I feel that silver should not get into lines secretly as it is a factor that some people really do not fancy in their personal tastes and would not want in their breeding lines at all (also it gives another challenge while already it is a lot of work to breed a good Manx in all other aspects!)  I remember a lovely redtabby Manx in the USA who turned out to inherit as the redsilvertabby ("cameo-tabby") her really was.  This however an easy mistake, also often made here by Main Coon and Norwegian Forest Cats breeders working with red combined with the inhibitor gene, as the white ground color of a red-tabby does not differ much from the off-white ground color of a redsilvertabby - determining kittens by bright daylight is here a good help.  I hope from him many silver children and grandchildren are still around and available to those who would like to go in for the challenge to breed really good silver in Manx.  It would be a pity if a natural factor belonging to the breed (I have seen some silvers in Man myself, amongst which a very funny colored silvertortierabby with a lot of white) would be lost or only perpetuated in a non-committed way by breeders who do not value what they have in their cat's legacies and just tolerate it as long as it is there, resulting in cats that are scarcely visible low-grade smokes, being wrongly registered as blacks often, or wrongly colored silvertabbies with just a faded ground color and brownish tinged parts in their silver hair roots.  Such cats, if shown, do the lovely silver colors no good and will only give those that do not fancy the factor, grounds for even more disliking it, instead of convincing them that it can be a nice addition to the color palette of the breed in its own right.  The Oriental breeders did NOT show their first generations out of for example a low grade smoke and a browntabby yet.  It only would harm their end goal.  Instead they upgraded the needed polygenes by selective breeding a real good silver ground-color with a clear well defined dark pattern lying on it.  I hope that my article will encourage those that do still have some "hidden" silver left in their lines to act and try to improve it towards something good solid silver in any color or pattern combination possible, so the wonderful "I" gene will not whither away but have its own place in the Manx breed which it deserves.  Once I would love to breed an odd-eyed smoke calico Manx (to name a funny color)- but only when I knew the silver Manx I would need for a mating would be a decent silver guy with enough polygenes to ensure a decent silver color in his kittens and not get a muddy wrongly colored result in neither-no-kittens who are silver genetically, but with that all is said of them.  To quote Barbara St. Georges who once in an article about the Manx standard described her smoke Gr.C. Briar-Brae Mesa, saying: "[the silver should be] the icing on the cake."  And an icing is the perfect finishing touch but definitely not some randomly distributed melting white cream dripping from the cake!

NOTE: Barbara St Georges says: "It was Dave Bandy- a long time judge- who said it was icing on the cake-not me- He was making Mesa BEST in show back in the 70's-when he said--" Having a white undercoat such as this on a seeming black cat is like iceing on a cake ...... As you know the standard for smoke does call for white--certainly not silver"-    ooops, we stand corrected!

So - I hope this article will do something and maybe in ten years time I will write to one of you in the USA asking to export something nice silver in Manx to me.  But now I feel I just stick to perfecting my zillion other goals I have a serious Manx breeder like roundness, arch, boning, coat, sweet round open head expression, outgoing funny temper, genetic health and stamina, fertility, and then of course perfecting my own favorite harlequin and van colors including trying to fix one way or the other (another unsolved as yet genetic puzzle for me!) the funny odd eyes that come along with it sometimes......

One last word about the silver factor- in the old days mistakes were made as are nowadays.  Several cats that were indeed silver were not registered as such, but also the opposite happened - cats that, when researching their pedigree most likely were not smoke but just a badly colored-though solid cat, were incorrectly registered as being smoke.  (this happens also today still I know).  As the offspring did not reflect this the mistake was most of the times corrected by time itself.  This however makes it even more difficult to trace back the real roots of the silver gene in some Manx lines.  I have tried to weed the most pseudo-smokes out of my Manx data base but let them be standing as such when I was not 100% sure if a specific cat was smoke or not.

To give you a hint where to look for the real silver genes behind the current lines I hereby list all the silver colored Manx ( including those that are/were white but hid the silver under all that "white cover")  I have in my Manx data base for you -  check those likes(lines) and see if you can explain that strange or funny colored discoloration in your cats if you have that present, now you know....., and DO something good with it!  As far as I have traced it two of the three main roots or the current silver remnants stems from the Isle of Man imports - the Hi-Camp cats went back to those (behind Sinleo Poco Dot), the lines from Helle go back to Manninagh Miss Tiger Lil and if someone should know the source of the silver gene behind the Mimanx cats listed (Br: Lucille Whitlock)  I'd appreciate to know the further ancestry of those cats.!
